Why It SUCKS to Own a Business

We all know the benefits of owning a business and many of us dream of becoming our own bosses—meaning, at one point, we will have people working for us, looking up to us and that is when things begin to SUCK.

When I had a job some few years ago, I did not actually care much about the state of the damn business. I did the minimum I could and at the end of each month, I had my salary coming in.

I was one of the many people who did not care about the company and took a lot of piss but shockingly, I was rewarded each year with a little pay rise and most times I said, my boss must be really messed up in his head to be giving us bonuses when all we do is take the piss.

It use to only knock me that I had a job when it was time to go to work and during the hours that I was at work, I remained just an employee. The moment time was up, I closed the computer and walked out of the building—not caring about if the business burnt down or if the business was doing well financially.

The truth is; I did not really care beyond my working hours and so did most of my colleagues—after all, we did not own the business.

But things changed when I became self-employed and it even got worse when I started hiring other people to do certain things that I couldn’t do or did not have the time to do.

Now I cannot even sleep for 60 minutes without thinking about my business, the way forward, the state of things, the financial struggles—and increasingly, I worry about how I am going to pay all the people I’ve hired to do things for me at the end of each month.

It really sucks to own your own business—and this is because, you cannot take the damn piss anymore. This makes me miss those days when I was just an employee, the piss taker.

Karma they say is a ‘biatch’…right? Soon as I became my own boss, I realized how much my former boss may have been worried about his business and today, I have some people taking the piss out of my business too. After all, they don’t also own the business and I am being paid back in my own coin.

What these people forget is that, they would be paid back too—and the cycle will continue.

But the fact remains; owning a business really sucks—and life is far easier if you are just an employee, the piss taker.

I used to complain about working for 8 hours a day as an employee but today, I work 12-16 hours a day—and on top of it, people take the piss out of me.

Don’t get me wrong, owning a business definitely comes with a lot of benefits but you must be ready to do more than you did when you were an employee if you really want to own a business— for more than year.
